”Rising out of the ashes isn’t just for mythological creatures.
You can do it with your own two hands.
Just make sure there is a dagger in one of them.”
((An Ul'dahn crime community hub located on Mateus, but open to all worlds. Focusing on a central plot story, acting as an RP supplement and networking opportunity.))

the Community
Welcome! The Ashen Coin is a group focused on perpetuating the Ul’dah crime community. We seek like-minded characters to join us. Interactions will consist of monthly events, open pop-up RP, rumors and plots to follow up on, and hangouts. We seek to build a group that enjoys open RP, sharing rumors, picking up small jobs, and brainstorming ideas.
Overall, it's a casual space to bounce ideas and plot around, to act on and bring back to the greater FF14 community.
We’re starting small, but our goal is to grow into a hub that covers all aspects of Ul’dah’s underworld. We’re looking for folks who are into exploring the deeper layers of Ul’dah’s culture and its criminal side. This also includes people from the outside who get caught up in our world.
THE SHORT OF IT
The Ashen Coin is an Ul'dah-based criminal gang/cartel with deep ties to the inner workings and culture of the criminal underground in the City of Gold.
Rumors on the streets suggest that they were once a powerhouse cartel, controlling fight clubs, running protection rackets, and holding influence both inside and outside the city. A year ago, they went silent, and word traveled through the shadows that they had been wiped out by an enemy faction.
Quietly and with little celebration, members of the Coin have begun to reemerge to draw on resources, contacts, and rebuild their networks, all with the hope of finding vengeance and reclaiming what is rightfully theirs.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Characters that consider themselves chaotic or neutral-aligned, with a lean toward a morally grey history.
- Characters with a background in crime or otherwise morally grey activities, or presently involved in organized crime of some sort. While we stress that we are seeking Ul’dah-focused players, those who wish to work with us in the City of Gold are welcome.
- Characters that do not necessarily consider themselves a criminal, but do not mind blurring the lines of good and bad, and have no problem working with individuals with a criminal background.
- Adult players who understand the difference between IC and OOC, have respect for other roleplayers, and avoid powerplaying / metagaming.
- Casual roleplayers that don't mind being proactive and reaching out to one another, and are not relying on others to create opportunities for them.
- Players who enjoy writing dark/mature themes that may include violence, criminal politics, and understand that you don't always have to "win" to have fun.

Our History & Logistics
While The Ashen Coin is best known for its profitable fighting pit and illicit gambling den buried deep in the seeder reaches of Thanalan, such enterprises are merely a public face. Their true prerogative - and greatest source of both connections and income - lies in acting as an enforcement and logistics arm of an unknown consortium at play, securing and safeguarding trade and travel routes across the region's unforgiving terrain.
Cargo typically arrives by airship from varying locations like La Noscea, Ishgard, and beyond, after which it is entrusted to The Ashen Coin caravans staffed by men and women equally adept at navigation and violence. These escorts see freight safely delivered from one destination to the next - some bound openly for Uldah's markets, and others diverted along quieter, more clandestine paths carrying goods best kept far from inspection points and the prying eyes and ears of Thanalan's bejeweled city.
The Ashen Coin keep these trade arteries safe and exclusive, laid out thoughtfully and intricately so that legal cargo is stamped and taxed in ways that appease Ul'dah's city officials, while auditors and the ever-curious eyes of the Monetarists nary see what needn't be seen.
The Brass Blades patrol the roads frequently, but syndicates like The Ashen Coin decide who survives them. With increasing competition, rivals often find their own shipments delayed, diverted, or never arriving at all; not because of the treacherous Thanalan heat or dangerous beasts that stalk the dunes, but because The Coin are oft charged with sending a message in blood.
The Ashen Coin earned their seat in the consortium’s table through organized diligence and sanctioned brutality. In a city where law bends to wealth and silence is bought by the purse, the Coin's work is a crucial part of the consortium's success and profit in Eorzea's most dangerous trade city.

Current Story
The Ashen Coin is more than just a criminal gang rooted in Ul’dah—it's a living heart beating within the shadows of the City of Gold with vast-reaching connections. For years, they wielded power, dominating fight clubs, enforcing protection rackets, and controlling the flow of trade with an iron grip. Under the unyielding leadership of Merrick, they claimed their stake, rising relentlessly in their pursuit of influence and riches.
But everything changed a year ago with ‘The Culling’—a brutal blow that shattered their organization and eliminated many members. A rival faction, Thal’s Vultures, came for the Ashen Coin, wiping out a good majority and stealing off with their leader. Almost a year later, and no one has heard of the fate of Merrick. The rival faction now benefits from the old territories of the Coin, and many believe the Coin to be dead.
Yet, from the ashes of devastation, the surviving members of the Coin are rising once more. They stand now as a collection of of merchants, intel birds, and violent enforcers. They are rallying their last resources, reconnecting with contacts, and rebuilding their networks. Their new leaders have raised the fervent hope of reclaiming what was stolen, restoring their power, and finally, of settling the score. This is more than a comeback—it's a relentless quest for revenge and profit.
LEADERSHIP
There is a new face to the Ashen Coin. A merchant named Suro Jahani stepped out of hiding to run the organization in Merrick's stead. And faces old and new have started to rally.THE FACE: Suro Jahani (NPC)

OOC RULES
I. Respect for All Players: Always treat fellow members with kindness and consideration, and be mindful of players' personal preferences and limits. If someone expresses discomfort with a certain subject or theme, respect their wishes. Furthermore, any form of racism or bigoted behavior will not be tolerated - players that display disruptive or offensive behavior will be removed immediately.
II. Consent in Roleplay: Roleplay is collaborative, and all actions affecting other characters should be consensual. Never force actions on another character without prior agreement. Mutual consent is extremely imperative, especially when writing darker/mature themes in roleplay.
III. No Meta-Gaming or Power-Gaming: Do not use knowledge that you've learned OOC to create an unfair advantage in roleplay. Additionally, roleplay should allow for conflict and challenge, and characters should have flaws and weaknesses. Sometimes, losing can be more meaningful than winning!
IV. IC vs OOC: If your character has a conflict with someone else's character, keep it in-character. Never let IC issues spill over into OOC interactions. Always prioritize friendly and positive OOC interactions.
V. Lore and Setting Compliance: While your character’s backstory and personal story may be unique, make sure they fit within the boundaries of the Final Fantasy XIV universe. We encourage as much creativity as possible while staying true to the world of Eorzea and the universe curated by Square Enix. When using the lore provided to us, the general rule of thumb is simple - bend, but don't break!
VI. We're here for FUN: Above all, remember that roleplaying is meant to be fun. We encourage creativity, collaboration, and respect in all aspects of our group. If you ever have any concerns, communicate with group leadership respectfully.
